From the recording Be Gay Do Crime: My Cover Story

Lyrics

Holy crap, I can't believe I'm doing this
Hey everyone, this is
If someone had told me just a few years ago that I'd be here sharing my music with all of you, I simply wouldn't have believed them

As a transgender woman and artist in Texas, my path has been, well, unexpected
It actually began when I was told I might never sing again
That diagnosis from my vocal coach and surgeon didn't feel like an end to me
It kind of felt like a challenge

So I started singing to prove them all wrong
But I kept on going to prove something to myself
I never set out to be famous
The thought of touring or playing live still makes me incredibly nervous and kind of like I want to vomit
But the idea that my music finds its way to you, that someone, especially from my community or an ally, might hear their own story in mine
And that's the real reward for me

This album is a collection of covers, but each one is a chapter from my life
I chose every song because its lyrics spoke directly to my transition or the profound loss of my ex-wife and many of my friends
The last four years have been a journey of heartbreak, of having to slowly, piece by piece, build myself back up for my five beautiful children
Making this music was a huge part of that rebuilding process
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening
Thank you for letting my songs be a part of your world

And please stick around to the very end
There's a special bonus track for you
It's actually a love song I wrote for my at-the-time wife back when I was still very much presenting as a masculine person

It feels like a message from another lifetime, and listening to it again was really, really weird
I think I'm ready to finally share it with all of you
So again, thank you, and please enjoy the rest of the album
